Shinto is a pretty legitimate magic tradition. You learn this if you study Japanese to some extent.
Whether they are immortal or not when they become Mikkyos and Bushis is not for me to say.
The rumor is though that the Japanese gods whoever they are are very elite, and perhaps still alive today. They are said to believe in lies to some extent.
There is also the view where all Japanese are gods, except hell is a forest there.
