WHAT ARE SOME COMMUNICATIONS FAILURES REGARDED AS IMPORTANT OPINIONS IN PHILOSOPHY?
Thanks for this most excellent question. This is a key point of debate at some of the highest levels of meta-theoretical research of which I can aspire to be aware. These might be classed under Social Paradoxes, or Philosophical-Technological Paradoxes.
Some examples are:
- DIABOLICAL GENIUSES: The problem of ‘lost translation’ or misunderstanding a historical genius, sometimes this might be called the ‘diabolical genius problem’ or the ‘misunderstood genius problem’. The person presents an idea which seems a bit too radical, like Socrates defending the divinity of the Soul, or Galileo defending Heliocentrism. Then the person ends up being judged as if they are dying of intelligence rather than just causes. For example, Zheng Guo invents immortality, then is sent to burn in hell forever. Marie Antoinette defends modern fashion, then has her head cut off ‘in the fashionable way’. The brutishness of ordinary people leers back at one. At the point of misunderstanding, the mistranslation is translated as a good opinion, regardless of any sophisticated philosophy. What is ‘good’ about the opinion is always that it is ‘successfully bad’. The genius is invariably translated as ‘unsuccessfully good’ so as to punish them, which often results in the abuse of their inventions.
- VAIN APOCHRANYSMS: The problem of vain apochranysms as I call it. E.g. future vanity rarely understands the past. An example of this is that if someone in Caesar’s time discusses a machine, they mean it has divine intelligence of its own, but if someone reflects on their reflection 2000 years later they may think the person is being wistful or Romantic. As a result, the modern person will misjudge the spiritual seriousness of almost any important matter to which the ancients apply consideration. To the ancients, the machine could be 1000 times more important than the future, but to the modern the machine can be no more than a reference to modernism. Spiritually the ancient person is right, but Romantically the modern person is right.
- UNOFFICIAL OFFICIATIONS: What I call the ‘unofficial officiation problem’. Someone intends something very seriously, but only within their assumptions, but that is not the real problem as far as judging officiation. The real problem as far as judging officiation is that someone else re-formats officiation to mean something unofficial, something that could apply easily outside the original assumptions, kind of in any way anyone might use it. However, although someone may misuse the officiation, it is not even official if is made unofficial, thus, the original officiation only means something if it is understood very directly like the original person. In effect, what is always misunderstood is that the officiator did not intend to communicate anything. Their whole assumption is that they will make no impact. It is the unofficiating person who actually makes the officiation official, but only as a mistranslation. The real translation is that the officiator did not intend to communicate anything. They’re hedgehog personalities who hate communicating, so they communicate by saying they are not communicating, directed only at people that already expect not to communicate. That’s what they really mean by officiation, is understanding that they are special people who do not communicate.
- THE MASTER MEME: There is a communication that occurs between generations, which is the communication of a language, sensation, or urging which the master claims to have, but which the student supposedly must learn. In the process of learning the ‘meme’ the student displaces their own true original feelings, and replaces them with an older ontology. In the process, the student learns to emotionally die, or in rare cases they learn to dominate the society. The meme is also potentially only half-true, or even just an artificial construct or artificial reassurance designed to prop up the social order. The ‘master meme’ bears some similarity to religious tautologies: it confers something which is an ‘effective assumption’ but whose power does not seem to arise out of its language. The follower who rejects the arbitrariness of the ‘master meme’ loses their mind. the person who accepts the arbitrariness becomes emotionally dead, a hollow part of the ‘religious ontology / tautology’.
