"One story that carried through my entire life was the idea of a patio. When I was a teenage woman, I had a fling with a man who said he owned the tallest building in France. Later I was disappointed that Versailles did not claim to be so tall. I joked with the king that perhaps we should put some guns up on top of the roof."
"One other thing is quite memorable. Towards the close of the revolution we were out of firewood, and I was shivering under the covers with the king. I told him that what he had said sounded like natural philosophy. This is perhaps the most 'modern' thing I have ever said, even in the years afterwards, which appeared to be more modern in time."
